Sony shares surge on HD DVD demise Sony's shares gained nearly five percent today on news that Toshiba will be bowing out of the latest movie format wars, reports Reuters. The announcement that it will cease production of HD DVD players before the end of April leaves Blu-ray, which is integrated into the PlayStation 3 console, as the victorious format. Sony's stock in the US hit a high of $47.07 in early trade on the New York Stock Exchange, before dropping slightly to $46.96, up $2.18 or 4.87 percent from Friday's close. Analysts were in agreement that the demise of HD DVD was a boon for Sony and could ultimately be bad news for Microsoft's console. William Blair %26 Company analyst Ralph Shackart said that, ''We believe Blu-ray's victory could drive market share gains for the PS3, as we believe consumers will now be more willing to pay up (versus 360) for the standard Blu-ray player.'' Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter told GameSpot that he agreed. He said, ''Educated consumers who have been holding off buying on the format war to make a decision will now probably buy a PS3. Uneducated consumers who have no idea that there was a format war are likely to get pushed to buy a PS3 by sales clerks. Retail sales clerks being what they are, they are now really, really going to push sales of Blu-ray, and therefore the PS3.'' Pachter believes that by the end of this year's holiday season, the PS3 is likely to now emerge victorious in the console war. He told GameSpot, ''The real problem for the 360 is that very few people will buy a 360 and a PS3. So therefore, every PS3 sale will likely mean that person won't buy a 360, so this news will ultimately hurt 360 sales. But I don't think it will hurt the Wii. If I had to bet, I'd say Microsoft gets no more than 30 percent of the total install base, and Sony and Microsoft slug it out, and Sony will ultimately prevail.''sourcePachter: PS3 will ''ultimately preva ...

I guess this guy missed the 3000 stories about a 360 Blu-Ray add-on in the works.
Blu Ray will help but it won't be the sole reason for PS3s success.
Blu Ray will help but it won't be the sole reason for PS3s success.
It better not be... Otherwise I'll have absolutely no reason to buy one...
I guess this guy missed the 3000 stories about a 360 Blu-Ray add-on in the works.
I thought that was a rumor =/
I'd be inclined to agree with them as things stand now, but considering MS apparently has some major announcements planned for tomorrow and we don't know what the other Blu Ray player manufacturers (Samsung, Pioneer et al.) are planning regarding pricing over the remainder of 08, it's tough to make any sort of accurate prediction. Sure today Sony's the favourite, but in just over 13 hours MS could very easily be the frontrunner. Getcha popcorn ready.
I would like to think it will be games that will cause the PS3 to, ''ultimately prevail.''Not Blu-ray.
That will always be the case for the top console in the end, and although it's easy to poke fun of a console in it's infancy, this Blu-Ray Factor can't be denied. When more people are picking up PS3's due to this, they in tern expand the userbase, thereby giving third parties incenetice to look at the PS3 in a big way. That's what this analyst thinks anyways, and he does make sense. The thing I look at is the big guns for the PS3 haven't exploded yet, and the PS3's large price has kept it from growing to a larger install base, but the price is coming down, and the games are coming.
No and it does it will barely have any games on it. If devs and pubishers dont see their games selling well they will stop making games for that platform. People buy a console because of games not watching movies and top it off few people have an HDTV.
If PS3 sales take off because of Blu-Ray winning the format war, then I wonder if that will translate into devs taking more risks making PS3 exclusives.
I would like to think it will be games that will cause the PS3 to, ''ultimately prevail.''Not Blu-ray.
As I mentioned before, that's a false dichotomy. Both will help.

I guess this guy missed the 3000 stories about a 360 Blu-Ray add-on in the works.
I thought that was a rumor =/
It is, but M$ good news travels better and farther thru-out the net, so that by the time we hear it, it's factual.Kinda like ALL YEAR we heard how horrible the PS3 sales have been all year, and NOW we know they aren't as bad as these internet folks make it out to be.
I guess this guy missed the 3000 stories about a 360 Blu-Ray add-on in the works.
Do you really think that would help the 360? If anything an add-on just makes the PS3 look even better.
I guess this guy missed the 3000 stories about a 360 Blu-Ray add-on in the works.
1) They are rumors at this point. Microsoft probably wants to make one, but Sony has to grant the license2) Add-ons are not as appealing as built-in drives, as evidenced by the chilly reception of the 360 HD DVD add-on.
It will help that's for sure.
unfortunately brand name alone will force the ps3 to win this generation, nothing more. Blu-ray and quality games will play a role but playstation has its brand set in stone at the moment like nintendo, its not going anywhere anytime soon.

If it did N64 would have completely destroyed the PS1.

People have been hinting at a major announcement tomorrow, and with various retailers listing all 360 SKUs as discontinued I'd bet you dollars to donuts that MS will make some sigificant announcements if not tomorrow, than in the coming weeks. I'm not saying something is coming for sure, but it certainly looks that way.
